Attribution Is Broken — Here's What to Do
Last-click attribution — crediting the final touchpoint before a conversion — dramatically understates the contribution of awareness and consideration-stage activities. A customer who discovers your brand through an Instagram video, visits your website twice, reads a blog post, and then converts via a Google search generated revenue at every step of that journey. Multi-touch attribution models distribute credit more fairly, though they require more sophisticated tracking infrastructure.
Customer Lifetime Value Changes Everything
A campaign that generates customers with a high lifetime value (LTV) is worth far more than one that generates the same number of customers who churn after a single purchase. When measuring ROI, segment your conversions by predicted LTV. Double down on the campaigns and channels that bring in customers who stay. Measuring by acquisition cost alone optimises for the wrong outcome.
Build a Reporting Cadence
Effective measurement requires consistency. Establish a weekly pulse check covering the metrics most sensitive to immediate action — ad spend efficiency, lead volume, conversion rate — and a monthly strategic review covering trend lines, channel contribution, and LTV evolution. Quarterly, reassess your strategy in light of accumulated data. This cadence separates reactive brands from those that learn their way to growth.
